MAMBAJAO, Camiguin, July 27 (PIA) – At the height of the recent news on almost 2,000 people being poisoned by durian and mangosteen candies in the Caraga region, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Camiguin Provincial Office conducted a special monitoring of business establishments in the commercial district of the capital town of Mambajao, more particularly in major groceries and different pasalubong centers in the province on July 15-17, 2015.
DTI said this concern is very relevant considering that the site of the poisoning is near the province and these products are being considered as pasalubong for tourists and visitors in the Davao Region.
While food safety is a mandate of the Department of Health (DOH) – Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the DTI has interests in the source, volume and detail of the manufacturers of these products, considering that it is also one of the mandates of DTI to ensure product standards to protect the consumers and the general public.
Camiguin being one of the prime tourism destinations in the country, the likelihood of these types of products being available in the locality is high and DTI-Camiguin cannot be complacent about the issue.
The result of the special monitoring showed that there was no business establishment selling these kinds of products.
DTI-Camiguin will continue to act pro-actively on this issue in partnership with the Local Government Units (LGUs) to ensure that similar incidents will not happen in Camiguin.
It is also set to conduct a province wide monitoring of the products this month in time also for its regular monthly supplies and price monitoring of basic, prime commodities and mandatory products. - From piacamiguin.wordpress.com
